Phonics and reading
From the beginning of the 2022/23 academic year, Dudley Infant Academy will be using a Department for Education validated phonics scheme entitled 'Little Wandle - Letters and Sound Revised' for the teaching of phonics. We are very excited about how this scheme will support the development of children's phonics knowledge and their reading skills. We are very proud of the current provision that children receive at Dudley to help them learn to read and we feel confident that the Little Wandle package will enhance this even further. Preparations for implementing the Little Wandle programme of learning have been ongoing during terms five and six of this academic year and staff training has been undertaken. We aim to update this page of our website during the summer period to include further details about the teaching of phonics here at Dudley. In the meantime, you may wish to visit the Little Wandle website using the link below to find out more information about their validated phonics scheme.
At Dudley we follow the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme. This is taught from Reception up to Year 2. The children learn to recognise phonemes and graphemes and how to segment and blend them (sound out words).
At Dudley we use a range of reading schemes such as Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Rockets. These are organised into book bands to support progression in reading.
Children also have access to a class library with a rich variety of picture books that they can borrow to support their reading.
